Simply Saturday

A friend recently expressed that eating out on Saturday night was particularly meaningful to her. There was something about the thought of going to a restaurant with the intention to eat good food as a planned activity that was special, made even more so by whom you choose to go out with. As I pondered the significance of the Saturday night, my own Saturday unfolded before me and not surprisingly revolved around where to eat that evening. We wanted nothing fancy, nothing expensive, but something special nonetheless, which was precisely what we got at Tia Pol.

This slice of a restaurant on 10th Avenue across from the flashing lights of the Empire Diner opened its doors seven weeks ago. A welcome addition to the burgeoning tapas circuit (Casa Mono, Alta), Tia Pol gets its name from a Spanish cat that lived next to one of the owners in Spain. Long and narrow, Tia Pol welcomed us with its exposed brick walls and low lit bar, keeping us warm from the unusually bitter chill outside.

The menu offers twenty some odd small plates that can be upgraded to large for twice the price, not that you'll mind since the most expensive item on the menu taps out around $15. My companion feasted like a middle aged man on Lipitor, devouring fried delicacies such as chickpea fritters, white corn and lemon thyme croquetas and potatas bravas with spicy aioli. I popped salty sweet green peppers into my mouth one after another, stopping only to finish my steamed cockles and razor clams as well as three pint-sized jamon paquitos with artichokes and manchego. We ordered the dessert special, chalked on the blackboard behind the bar, of a peach poached in white wine with egg foam. Soft and sweet, it lingered with a summeryness that quickly vanished as a cold draft blew in from the open door.

Our meal ended as quickly as it had started with both of us ordering smaller plates that disappeared leaving us happy to be full but sad to be done. Pretty good for seven weeks I thought and for a Saturday night, even better.
